10 years anniversary of EVS (European Voluntary Service) – ARCI Catania 2002-2012

Wednesday, 6th June 2012

18.30h at the courtyard of CGIL

Via Crociferi, 40 Catania

Ten years of shaping the future

2002 – 2012

With a bit hard beginning in the distant 2002, these 10 years of European Voluntary Service (EVS) in Arci Catania have been a pleasant voyage for both the volunteers coming to work here but also for the Arci Catania local volunteers and staff that year after year welcomes young enthusiastic people from all over Europe and beyond.

Because of the broad range of activities that take place in Arci Catania, every volunteer has the possibility to find its place gaining skills and developing competencies. Activities such as: development of your own radio show; organization of various kinds of workshops; presentation of your own culture through intercultural movie nights; organization of music festivals; intercultural dinners; intercultural social theatre; possibility to teach your own language; and so much more…

For many volunteers both hosted and sent by Arci Catania, the EVS has been a gateway towards personal growth and self awareness. Reflecting upon their EVS projects, many have come to realize that exactly that period of their lives has been the turning point.

During the celebration (6.06.2012) of the 10th anniversary of EVS in Arci Catania, many of the Italian volunteers that were sent by Arci, shared their testimonies and experiences regarding the difficulties they have encountered and the ways they have overcome them, shared their memories of the places they have visited and the people they have met, they gave advices for the future volunteers and suggestions for the ones that are still in doubt- to go or no to go.

There was a photo contest which included all the photos that were sent by the previous EVS volunteers, both sent and hosted by Arci, and the voting was happening during the entire evening. The winning photo will be put on a post card and will represent the EVS for one year.

don’t call it south-east anatolia, please…

la porta tra l’oriente e l’occidente, si respirano le radici della cultura moderna e una irresistibile voglia di rivolta…”

The pleasant and exciting evening was concluded with a concert by Dirty Duck and Davide Di Rosolini, leaving the guests wanting for more.

The entire event was organized and executed by this year’s EVS volunteers in Arci Catania (Helena, Theodora and Biljana) and the National Civil service volunteers (Alessandro, Claudia, Ivana and Barbara).

Super Volunteer - Intercultural voluntary mission

International Training course

Nicolosi , Sicily, Italy 15th- 21st June 2012

Who are we?

Arci Catania is a no-profit organisation active in the field of non-formal learning, youth work and international youth mobility since 1999. We’ve a long experience in organising international training events especially within Youth in Action programme.

Who is Super Volunteer?

Super Volunteer – Intercultural voluntary mission training course can bring some fresh ideas and approaches in Learning in the field of volunteering and the field of Intercultural Dialogue. International voluntary experiences such as Evs are great opportunities to practise intercultural learning and to explore culture diversity. At the same time also in volunteering at local and national level, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue are in question because of the coexistence of different cultures in society and in the same organisation. But are organisations and youth workers prepared enough to support intercultural learning process and intercultural dialogue in voluntary activities at local and international level?

An international team of trainers is preparing a training course on how to support intercultural learning processes of volunteers and alternative approaches towards it. The training course will involve, during 7 days (included travel days), 22 youth workers and leaders dealing with intercultural learning and volunteering at local or international level (such as ngo representatives, Evs mentors, etc. )

Main aims are to learn how to deal with cultural diversity, to use cultural diversity as a tool to discover identity and to work with concrete aspects of cultural diversity in a specific context such as international voluntarism.

Come and join us on this journey where Super Volunteer is a hero and makes all the prejudices come down to zero!

Objectives:

-      Awareness of the importance that influence of culture has on person’s behavior and identity, especially in international voluntary activities.

-      Develop knowledge and competence in key concepts of intercultural learning and life long learning with young people.

-      Pointing out the importance of international voluntarism and cultural issues in YIA Programme.

Methodology

The methodology that is going to be used is based on experiential learning and alternative approaches towards voluntary work and intercultural learning. A Specific feature of the training is practical focus on tools and exchange of tools among youth practitioners, therefore in certain moment it will consist of two parallel working groups in one TC, for the sake of proposing more tools to everyone.

Participants will be able to experience Super Volunteer with shared sessions at the end of every working day, where they’ll build a common learning experience through sharing, evaluation, discussion and integration of both groups’ experiences.

Also, another specific quality of this training course is the focus on tools and concrete use of learning products, therefore participants will be supported and guided on development, implementation and evaluation of their own tools for intercultural learning and dialogue.
